p.131 ‘…strides were made by BPB in the borehole logging and instrument markets, under the direction of J.R. Gunn. In 1970, BPB Industries (Instruments) was set up. This company, the potential of which is considerable, develops and sells special instruments and provides a borehole logging service. This project arose from a geophysical survey around the Group in 1963. From that, it was decided to develop borehole logging techniques within the Group.
The principle of borehole logging is to lower an electronic ‘eye’ into a bore-hole. Impulses are sent to the surface instrument and details of the strata penetrated are recorded. This technique, which has been widely used in the oil industry, is being applied by BPB to gypsum, coal and other minerals. It has the great advantage of obviating, in many cases, the need to produce cores to assess the contents of boreholes. This side of the business has exciting international prospects and subsidiary companies are now operating in Canada and Australia. BPB Industries (Instruments) has also developed instruments for sale, largely to the plasterboard and paper industries.’
